Artificial intelligence on YouTube: ask a question and sort out the comments

YouTube is currently testing two features based on artificial intelligence that aim to increase user engagement and facilitate the educational process. The first of these features is a conversational AI tool called “Ask”, which allows users to ask questions related to videos and receive answers based on wide language models. The second feature is an AI tool that analyses long sections of comments, grouping them by topic, making it easier for moderators and ensuring readability.

Two new features based on artificial intelligence that YouTube is testing could improve user engagement and education online. Currently, a limited number of YouTube Premium subscribers have access to these services.

The first feature “Ask”, is conversational artificial intelligence that allows users to ask questions about the videos they are watching and receive answers generated by large language models (LLMs), according to 9to5Google (this website offering information about Google products and technologies). In addition, users can ask the artificial intelligence to suggest relevant material.

The “Ask” button, which is currently only available to YouTube Premium users in English (18+) on the Android app, will appear in selected English-language videos. YouTube intends to make it available to more users in the coming weeks.

The second feature is a tool based on artificial intelligence that divides large comment sections of long videos into easy-to-read segments of topics. This will make it easier for creators to moderate comment sections and help users identify the comments they are most interested in.

For some videos with extensive comment sections, the “Topics” category will be displayed alongside sorting options “Top” and “Newest”. Creators will be able to delete entire specific comment threads and the individual comments themselves that appear under specific topics.

YouTube has recently been making fairly heavy use of artificial intelligence on its platform. It is currently awaiting the release of a tool that lets you record audio using the voices of famous musicians, to include the launch of a beta version of YouTube Create, a tool Aloud that makes it easier for creators to dub their videos, and an advertising tool to target ads for important occasions or holidays. Not to mention AI tools tried out on YouTube Music, such as a feature that generates personalised playlist covers.

Both of these YouTube features are currently in the experimental phase and can be accessed via the “Try experimental new features” tab on the YouTube Premium and mobile app. At the moment, the only feature available to some users of the Premium version is “Explore comment topics summarized by AI”, and the trial period will only last until 5 December.
